Chain of Fools — Aretha Franklin

• The song was written by Don Covay, who composed it as a demo originally intended for Otis Redding. Producer Jerry Wexler heard it and redirected it to Aretha Franklin instead.

• Covay wrote it around 1953, originally as a gospel song sung with his brothers and sisters. His son Tony later said his father intended it as a commentary on the cycle of poverty and slavery — not a love song about a cheating boyfriend.

• The trademark tremolo guitar intro was played by Joe South. The song is built almost entirely on a single minor chord — one of the few major hits structured that way.

• The Lady Soul sessions were emotionally raw. Aretha was in an abusive marriage to her manager Ted White and was also devastated by Otis Redding’s death in a plane crash on December 10, 1967. Producer Wexler later said he believed Otis was on Aretha’s mind throughout those sessions.

• Aretha’s sister Carolyn — who sang backup on the track — said: “Aretha didn’t write ‘Chain,’ but she might as well have. It was her story.”

• It hit #1 on the R&B chart and peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 — kept out of the top spot by “Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)” by John Fred & His Playboy Band.

• It won the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone ranked it #249 on their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.

• Background vocalists on the track included The Sweet Inspirations, Carolyn Franklin, Erma Franklin, and Ellie Greenwich.
