Boogie Shoes — KC & the Sunshine Band

• The song was part of the 1975 self-titled KC & the Sunshine Band album, then used as the B-side to "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty" in 1976 — but its biggest break came when it landed on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in 1977.

• Bassist/co-writer Richard Finch said he never expected it to end up on a movie soundtrack. Producer Robert Stigwood placed it specifically because shoes were such a central part of the disco aesthetic — rhinestone heels, glimmering outfits, the whole façade.

• According to a fan account, the song was actually written by a Harold Seay, who was in 10th grade at the time. He wasn't given writing credit but received a settlement.

• Structurally, the song uses a sixteen-bar blues chord progression — unusual for a disco track.

• It has shown up in a long list of films beyond Saturday Night Fever: Mallrats, Boogie Nights, Detroit Rock City, The Wedding Date, The Intern, and Knock at the Cabin, among others.

• KC received a Grammy for Producer of the Year in 1978 for his work on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack — the same album that gave "Boogie Shoes" its second life.

• KC & the Sunshine Band became the first act to score four #1 pop singles in a 12-month period since the Beatles in 1964.

• The band was founded in Hialeah, Florida in 1973. Harry Wayne Casey has never lived more than 10 miles from his birthplace — and credits the area's multi-ethnic mix of pop, reggae, and Latin music as the origin of what he calls the "Sunshine Sound."
